Using indices of species’ potential range to inform conservation status

چکیده
Assessments of conservation status are typically based on short-term extinction risk, but the value indicators that compare current state species (e.g., abundance or distribution) to potential baselines is increasingly recognised. The use in legislation hindered by ambiguity how should be determined and interpreted, leading inconsistent application. Here, we explored species’ ranges as a consistent means quantifying for assessing distributions, key component status. Using breeding birds Great Britain (GB) case study, simulated where bird would expected occur today modelled world without human land use. We calculated indices contrasted these human-free with realised ranges. Our analyses revealed 42% GB have wider than 28% narrower These could lead reassessments priorities. Eighteen assigned ‘least concern’ regional IUCN Red List had much ranges, suggesting their more degraded currently recognised criteria. Some not under active management candidates higher prioritisation. approach provides systematic range reliant variable historic data expert opinion and, thereby, step forward resolving major contemporary problem assessment: set consistently. insights produced also scientific cultural relevance, revealing likely exist absence impacts. This used identify areas targeted restoration actions might return historically extirpated species, even novel colonists.

Determination of the Potential Habitat of Range Plant Species Using Maximum Entropy Method
This study aimed to identify the most important physical variables affecting the distribution of four range plants species (Tamarix aphylla, Calligonum comosum, Prosopis spicigera and Salsola rigida) habitats and to prepare potential habitat map of the species using Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) method in rangelands of Jiroft city, Kerman province, located in SE Iran. To this end, sampling of vegeta...

Demands on the resources of the deep-sea have increased in recent years. Consequently, the need to create and implement a comprehensive network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to help manage and protect these resources has become a global political priority. Efforts are currently underway to implement MPA networks in the deep North East Atlantic. To ensure these networks are effective, it is e...

Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) are an abundant and important component of the coastal ecosystems for the west coast of North America. Current Canadian federal herring management assumes five regional herring populations in British Columbia with a high degree of exchange between units, and few distinct local populations within them.
